Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw said on Wednesday that reports so far from the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) have indicated that Barbados was spared the worst effects of Potential Tropical Cyclone Two.

The system made its way over the southern Windward Islands overnight.

“We have had reports of roof damage caused by the heavy rains and also window panes being blown out because of the severity of the pressure of the wind.

“We have had one report of a tree falling on a house in St Thomas which, fortunately, did not result in any injury. While we are experiencing some showers across the island, the significant effects of the system have already been felt and all Government offices and schools will reopen this morning. All public transportation has also resumed,” the Acting Prime Minister said.

Bradshaw thanked members of the public for what she described as their quick response on Tuesday to the early closure of public and private sector services in preparation for the passage of the system.

She also urged residents to be prepared and to remain on alert for the remainder of the hurricane season which ends on November 30.

“I want to thank Barbadians for their quick response yesterday and to urge them to take this opportunity to check around their homes to secure palings and roofs, to clear up any debris and bulk waste that may be lying around [and] also to trim or remove any trees that could present a danger to life or to property,” she said.

“Remember we are only at the start of the hurricane season and that given the unpredictable nature of recent systems, our best line of defence in dealing with climate change is to be prepared and to pay attention to reports coming from official sources.”
