Cyril Ramaphosa has delivered his plan to weed corruption out of the ANC – but will the people of South Africa buy into it? The president has rallied against a ‘choreographed campaign’ to stop him from tackling certain factions of his own party, after revealing the 10 major resolutions made during this weekend’s NEC meeting.

Speaking on Monday afternoon, Ramaphosa explained that there would be a lot more accountability facing ANC members in the months ahead. After a ‘COVID looting spree’ saw emergency funds raised by some politicians during the pandemic, the president has been under enormous pressure to take concomitant action – here’s what the head of state has promised.
- The NEC has endorsed Ramaphosa’s anti-corruption letter as a clear articulation of the party’s policy.
- It was resolved that ‘a choreographed campaign against the president’ will not prevent Ramaphosa’ from tackling corruption.
- Cadres of the movement formally charged with corruption must now step aside from all leadership positions in the ANC.
- These implicated officials can only return to work pending the finalisation of their cases.
- Anyone convicted of serious crimes, such as corruption, must resign their positions and face disciplinary action.
- Cadres thought to be involved with corruption must explain themselves to the ANC Integrity Commission. Some individuals will be instructed to stand aside if they cannot adequately explain their behaviour.
- Both the ANC and NEC will work together to restore the ‘core values’ of the party.
- The ANC will create mechanisms for members to reveal their financial interests, striking a proper balance between privacy and transparency.
- Guidelines will be developed for ANC members and their families, when it comes to dealing with private companies. This must prevent politicians from profiting in an undue manner.
- The ANC will now work to discuss these measures in Parliament, opening the matter up for debate in the National Assembly.
Resolutions from the ANC NEC meeting
Ramaphosa also revealed that there will be more to come from the NEC this week, as they discuss plans for the 2021 Local Elections. The decision to hold municipal votes rests on a knife-edge, due to the continued threat of COVID-19.
“The NEC also discussed matters relating to local government and listened to proposals on Electoral Reform. We also made preparations for the 2021 Local Elections, but these discussions are ongoing. We also spoke about our organisational campaigns, taking note of the party’s efforts to implement non-racialist policies.”
