Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt has made it clear that transfers will continue to be the remit of the club’s Football Manager Bobby Motaung.

While Hunt will have input into the process he will not be as hands-on as when he was in charge of Bidvest Wits.

Kaizer Chiefs are currently serving a two-window transfer ban which will fall away come July, allowing Hunt to bring players in for the first time in his tenure as coach.

Hunt has expressed his support for what he termed the ‘proper structures’ put in place by Kaizer Chiefs, insisting that this was how a big club needs to be run.

SOUTH AFRICA: JOHANNESBURG: Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt gestures during Absa Premiership against Kaizer Chiefs at Stadium, Gauteng.

The former Wits and SuperSport United coach built himself a reputation as a wheeler dealer, making the most of free agents and players with expiring contracts.

“It’s not going to work like that. Obviously everything will be done through the football manager in cohesion with myself and a few other people,” Hunt told reporters.

“We will see. As I say, everything is done with proper structures and signings – not just throwing things willy-nilly hoping it works.”

Hunt says that his focus on transfers will be to make sure that the targets are players who are the right fit for Kaizer Chiefs.

When asked if Kaizer Chiefs were lining up any transfer targets, Hunt said: “I’ve obviously got a list longer than my arm, but that’s all pie in the sky. It’s like saying you want this one and that one and knowing it’s not possible.

“Realistically, we are looking at targets like any club, even though we have not done it for some time now. But that is how it goes – what is attainable and what’s not is always a problem. You’ve got to be realistic. It’s like I say with football, anybody can come to the stadium and say ‘oh he’s a good player’. But what about the player who is the right player, that’s the most important one and that’s what we need to do.”

Halfway through his first season as coach Hunt sees Kaizer Chiefs sitting eighth on the Premiership standings, fully 15 points off the pace set by Mamelodi Sundowns.
