The future may be uncertain at the moment, but that does not mean that we should not plan for it anyway.

Applications at universities are open already for 2021. According to the Central Applications Office, universities and colleges have not pushed back their closing dates even though Grade 12 pupils are yet to write their mid-year exams.

This should not discourage you though, you can still apply using your final Grade 11 results to secure your place for 2021.

Make the right choice

Do not feel pressured to make the same choices that your friends are making, or your parents are suggesting.

You are the one who will be attending lectures for three to four years and ultimately may spend the rest of your life in that job. So, make a choice that you are happy with.

Discover your personality type and weigh up your strengths and weaknesses to find out which career path is most suitable for you.

A lot of people choose the wrong career path and frustrate themselves. Imagine not enjoying going to work but having to force yourself because there are bills that need to be paid.

There is a lot going on in the world, don’t let your work add on to the things that will have you feeling gloomy. You need to enjoy what you’re doing.

Apply early

The early bird catches the worm. Nothing is as frustrating as having the required points for the course that you want, but there are no more spaces available.

Applying early, and even getting accepted early, will allow you to relax and focus on your final exams, knowing that you have already gained admission.

This will also make things easy when you need to apply for funding, as you also need to apply early for most bursaries and grants.

Once you know what you want to study, don’t waste time. Secure your place.

If you applied for a course and don’t get the required points for it, you can still go back to school and improve your marks. There is no shame in that.

Ask for advice

Do your research and do not be afraid to ask university students for help. They are in a better position to help you make the right choice. They have been where you are and will help explain the different courses, their modules and possible career paths to take after completing the programme.

You will always find someone who is already employed in that particular field. Gather as much information from them as you can to get a clear picture of what you are committing yourself to.

Remember also that not everyone makes it to university or college immediately after completing high school.

Some people don’t even get there at all. That doesn’t mean that you cannot find other ways to earn a living.

If you can afford to, then consider taking a gap year to volunteer at an organisation you are passionate about, get your driver’s licence, take a short course, travel and explore the world. Life is worth living, so live it to the fullest!
