Bramha Kaiso, a 60-year-old resident of Corentyne, Berbice, who became disabled from a spinal injury and who suffered discomfort during the inclement weather, got relief after a contractor repaired his leaking roof.
Mohamed Raffik, the owner of Raffik and Sons Construction readily agreed to help when the Humanitarian Mission Guyana Inc. (HMGI) approached him.
A team from the HMGI learnt of the man’s plight while distributing relief hampers to 50 disabled people in the community for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Kaiso was grateful to them for reaching out to him. He explained that he fell from a roof while doing carpentry work 18 years ago and injured his spine. He had also done work as a fisherman and cane-cutter.
He informed the team that his tiny wooden one-flat house would leak whenever it rained.
Kaiso, who lives alone, had buckets set up around the house to catch the water.
Suresh Sugrim of the HMGI told Stabroek News that when Raffik visited to inspect the house, he was saddened at the condition.
Apart from fixing the roof, he ended up undertaking other work, such as repairing a section of the flooring and building a bed for the man.
The job took three days and Kaiso was relieved that his woes were taken care of.
He depends on a small monthly income through public assistance. He would give a portion of it to a kind neighbour who provides him with meals.
The team from the HMGI also returned later and provided Kaiso with sheets, pillows and other items to make his life easier.
The HMGI thanked Raffik as well the other donors for their contributions.
