Boseman’s untimely death fell on the recognized Jackie Robinson Day. In Major League Baseball, players across the league wear Robinson’s retired his No. 42 on their jerseys. The day of homage is typically celebrated on April 15. However, due to the unconventional MLB schedule shifted by COVID-19, a later date was chosen.

According to Dodger Blue, August 28 was selected because it is the anniversary of the March on Washington in 1963, which the Robinson family attended. It is also the day in 1945 when Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey met with Robinson to discuss his future in major league baseball.

“I was actually in bed watching a game, and I got the first text,” Robinson remarks.

She continues,  “I couldn’t believe it. I got 5,000 texts all at one time and I just turned off my phone. I was like, ‘I cannot deal with it.’ I turned off the television.”
