World champion to miss next Grand Prix but is said to be on the road to recovery after developing symptoms of coronavirus

RECOVERING: Lewis Hamilton has had a positive test for coronavirus

SEVEN TIMES Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has tested positive for COVID-19.

The world champion will now miss this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain. His team, Mercedes, said the Briton woke with mild symptoms on Monday and returned a positive result at a subsequent test and again at a retest.

A statement said that Hamilton, 35, was informed that someone he had been in contact with before his arrival in Bahrain had tested positive.

The Mercedes statement continued: “Lewis is now isolating in accordance with Covid-19 protocols and public health guidelines in Bahrain.Advertisement

“Apart from mild symptoms, he is otherwise fit and well, and the entire team sends him its very best wishes for a swift recovery.”
