The City of Johannesburg has warned there'll be no more speeding without consequences on its roads after the metro signed a new three-year contract with Syntell (Pty) Ltd to provide advanced law enforcement and crash management (ALECRAM) services for three years.

This is after the City, revealed earlier this year that they had not issued any speeding fines since May 2021.

It calculated a revenue loss of R36 million as a result.

Mayoral committee member for public safety David Tembe said the new contract would come into effect before the festive season's increase in traffic volumes.

"Syntell is a leader in end-to-end traffic law enforcement that provides cutting-edge technology-based services and systems for road safety, traffic management, and revenue collection," he said.

"Their accident and crash management module will help the JMPD to link crashes to an exact position on a road and to determine the reason for the crash."

Tembe warned motorists that there would be "zero tolerance" for lawlessness, or drunk and reckless driving during the festive season.

He added that the City would set up several roadblocks where motorists would be tested for "road fitness", including drunk driving, and that vehicles would be checked for roadworthiness.

He said Operation Night Life would be in full force, and that there would be no leniency for speedsters.

"Gone are the days when motorists had free rein and could speed on our roads without any repercussions and with total disregard for rules of the road.

"The flagrant disregard of the rules of the road, which results in the loss of life and serious injuries, will not be tolerated. We call upon all road users to work with us by obeying the law, keeping to the speed limit, and avoiding driving under alcohol. We wish all of our residents a blessed and safe festive season and urge everyone to arrive alive."
