A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Atlantis, Cape Town, in connection with the murder of his former girlfriend, Charne Viljoen.
Owen Steenberg made his first appearance in the Atlantis Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
He was arrested shortly after 21-year-old Viljoen was found stabbed to death in Saxonsea, Atlantis, on Monday, said police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana.
Taking to social media, the victim's uncle, Gerome Viljoen, said his niece had turned 21 on 1 April.
"She was stabbed numerous times [allegedly] by her ex-boyfriend, and died at the scene, it was such a [shock] for my entire family," he wrote.
Steenberg faces charges of intimidation, attempted murder and murder.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said it would be opposing his bail application.
"The community had handed over a petition requesting the NPA to oppose bail and the court not to release the accused," Ntabazalila added.
Steenberg is expected to appear in court on 13 May for his bail application.
