Covid-19 forces cancellation of Futsal tournament

New Era Entertainment, coordinators of the Mohammed Enterprise Futsal championships in the mining town of Linden has indicated that the seventh edition of the prestigious tournament will not be staged this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

According to  a release from the entity yesterday, the competition, which was initially penciled in for July 26th-August 23rd, has been shelved until further notice because of the current health climate.

“The management of New Era Entertainment wishes to inform Futsal enthusiasts across the country and more specifically, Linden, that the seventh edition of our annual Futsal tournament originally planned for July 26 – August 23, 2020, has been put on hold due to Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with the political crisis over the period leading up to the promotional date of the tournament.”

The entity, which has expanded its portfolio to include a Basketball Club Championship as well as an Inter-Schools Futsal Championship, initially held discussions with the relevant public health authority on the possibility of gaining eventual approval for the event.

“We have had preliminary discussion with the past and current members of the Covid-19 Pandemic Task Force and were advised to monitor the spread and the control of the virus over time, as the Task Force approval is a prerequisite for approval of the Guyana Football Federation, hence the reason we haven’t sought the approval of the GFF to date.

“The new climb in the daily numbers of positive results of the virus after new testing began under the new Government has further affected the playing of the tournament,” the release stated.

“However, we are now looking towards hosting the tournament as a year-end championship, depending on the control of the current pandemic and the current state of the facility that is now without seating accommodation for the safety and comfort of patrons and special invitees,” it added.

“The management of New Era Entertainment will be working closely with the new Task Force and the Guyana Football Federation, as we monitor the possibility of the new projected timeline of hosting the tournament at the end of the year, even if it has to flow over into the new year to climax. New Era Entertainment has already secured sponsorship pledges from many private sector institutions once clearance is given for the hosting of the tournament between the periods specified above,” the release ended.
