Seattle Seahawks Tyler Lockett Welcomes Tulsa Students To Seattle

Tyler Lockett and his “Light It Up Foundation’s” Job Shadowing and Scholarship Program welcomed twenty-five (25) Tulsans, (twelve (12) students and thirteen (13) parents/guardians) to Seattle on Sunday, June 4, 2023. The students were chosen from six (6) Tulsa High Schools (Memorial, Will Rogers, Central, Booker T. Washington, McLain, and Crossover Prep Academy). Each school selected six (6) students to participate in the program to draft essays on three (3) topics selected by Tyler. Tyler reviewed each essay and selected two (2) students from each school to participate in the program.

Students and parents/guardians were flown from Tulsa to Seattle on two separate flights, American and Delta on June 4th. The trip was free to all students and parents/guardians which included flights, hotels, transportation to and from Job Shadow Corporations and group events. The entire group received an unusual tour of Lumen Field (Seattle Seahawks home field). Each student and parent/guardian received a stipend of $400 for additional meals, shopping, and fun tours such as the popular Seattle Space Needle.

Tyler hosted a dinner and spoke to the group after they arrived on Sunday. On Monday, the Seattle Seahawks 12 Corporation was the first stop for the students as players and staff greeted them. On Tuesday, the students and parents/guardians had the opportunity to visit the Microsoft Corporation from 9am to 1pm. On Wednesday, students and parents/guardians traveled to Virginia Mason Hospital/Kraken Community Iceplex. At each Corporation, students can learn about such professions as business, computer science, IT, Kinesiology, physical therapy, sports medicine, and others. .

Minority Opportunity Program Facing Elimination

Mrs. Dionne Kelly was the hosting coordinator for the students and parents/guardians in Seattle. Mrs. Kelly accompanied the students and parents/guardians on all corporate visits and recreational outings.

Tyler is in his ninth season with the Seattle Seahawks. This is the fourth (fourth) year of Tyler’s five (5) year six-hundred -thousand-dollar ($600,000) commitment to the Job Shadowing and Scholarship Program. Tyler will evaluate the program after the fifth year.
