The Jai Hind Ground has received six floodlights compliments of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

Yesterday, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr., made good on a promise he made on a previous visit to the ground.

According to Ramson Jr., $800,000 had been given to the club to purchase lantern poles while an engineer has already identified the location where the lights will be stationed.

“The last time I was here, you guys said you needed lights. I sent over the $800,000 to the ground so they could buy the lantern poles and I brought six big 1000 watts spotlight here so it’s going to get you what you need,” the minister said.

He added: “This club had said it needed lights and I was very impressed with the kind of work you have done already to get the club and the ground to this point in the absence of government support. We want to make sure that you are able to grow from strength-to-strength, many hands make light work and the President [Irfaan Ali] has been reminding us at every single step that we need to fulfill our promises and we have to fulfill our commitments.”

Ramson Jr., also asked the club to request assistance which will be assessed and determined to see how best it can be fulfilled.

Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the Club, former President of the Berbice Cricket Board, Anil Beharry, thanked the minister for fulfilling his promise and gave the minister a brief history of the club.

“We want to say on behalf of the club `thank you very much.’ A quick back ground of the club, it started in 1940 and preparation of the ground started in 1996. We did have a bit of help from the PPP government and we all know the PPP government went there and did it before, they are back in power and will do it again…” Beharry said.

The former Region Six councilor, indicated that the support must go both ways.

“If the government is supporting us we have to ensure that we care the things so the government will be encouraged to spend more on us.”
