COVID-19 latest: Deaths rise by 216, caseload stands at 324 221

A further 216 deaths were reported since Wednesday, with a total of 324 221 cases now burdening South Africa’s health facilities.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced that the South African COVID-19 caseload has now reached 324 221, with 13 172 new cases reported since Wednesday.

He was sorry to announce the deaths of a further 216 people who had become infected with the deadly virus. This brings the total number of recorded fatalities to 4 669.

South Africa has conducted 2 324 923 tests to date, with 46 796 copleted in the last 24-hours alone.

With 165 591 people having successfully recovered after suffering from COVID-19, there are approximately 158 630 active patients currently battling to recover.

PROVINCIAL COVID-19 CASES:

The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Thursday 16 July: 

  • Gauteng – 117 895 cases;
  • Western Cape – 82 986 cases; 
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 35 604 cases; 
  • Free State – 7 312 cases; 
  • Eastern Cape – 57 186 cases; 
  • Limpopo – 3 883 cases; 
  • Mpumalanga – 5 572 cases; 
  • North West – 11 891 cases; 
  • Northern Cape – 1 831 cases; and 
  • Unknown – 61 cases. 

COVID-19 DEATH TOLL BY PROVINCE AS OF Thursday 16 July

The following confirmed COVID-19-related deaths have been detected in each province as of Thursday: 

  • Eastern Cape – 738 deaths;
  • Free State – 35 deaths;
  • Gauteng – 767 deaths;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 317 deaths;
  • Limpopo – 33 deaths;
  • Mpumalanga – 33 deaths;
  • North West – 48 deaths; 
  • Northern Cape – 15 deaths;
  • Western Cape – 2 467 deaths. 

LATEST RECOVERIES BY PROVINCE 

Mkhize announced the latest COVID-19 recoveries as follows: 

  • Eastern Cape – 39 865 recoveries;
  • Free State – 1 033 recoveries;
  • Gauteng – 45 743 recoveries;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 8 968 recoveries;
  • Limpopo – 1 492 recoveries;
  • Mpumalanga – 1 464 recoveries;
  • North West – 2 694 recoveries;
  • Northern Cape – 601 recoveries; and
  • Western Cape – 63 7316 recoveries.
