Former first lady Michelle Obama has added another notch to her media enterprise with the launch of a new podcast.
“The Michelle Obama Podcast” will go live on Spotify on Wednesday, July 29 as part of an ongoing partnership between the streaming service and Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company.
The Obamas formed Higher Ground after leaving the White House to produce powerful stories to entertain, inform, inspire, and to lift up new, diverse voices in the entertainment industry.
Since then Mrs. Obama’s memoir hit number one on The New York Times Best Seller’s list — followed by the subsequent release of the ‘Becoming’ documentary on Netflix.
Now, as for her venture into the world of podcasts, Michelle Obama says listeners will find candid and personal conversations with a focus on relationships and health.
“My hope is that this series can be a place to explore meaningful topics together and sort through so many of the questions we’re all trying to answer in our own lives,” Michelle Obama said.
“Perhaps most of all, I hope this podcast will help listeners open up new conversations—and hard conversations—with the people who matter most to them. That’s how we can build more understanding and empathy for one another.”
Spotify says an array of special guests include Dr. Sharon Malone MD, Craig Robinson, Valerie Jarrett, Conan O’Brien and Michele Norris for conversations ranging from sibling relationships, raising children to girlfriends, women’s health, mentorship and marriage.
“At Spotify we seek to connect listeners with the world’s most authentic and compelling voices,” Spotify Chief Content and Advertising Business Officer Dawn Ostroff said.
“We believe that audiences across the globe will be inspired by these most candid, most human and most personal conversations between First Lady Michelle Obama and her guests.”
In 2018, the Obamas also formed a long-term partnership with video streaming giant Netflix.
The former first couple will produce a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features.
The first of their films to roll out was ‘Becoming,’ in May, which captured Mrs. Obama up-close and personal in a rare behind the scenes look at her life, as she embarked on a 34-city book tour.
“Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others,” said Mrs. Obama.
“Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership.”
