The popular Cape Town Carnival parade is set to take place this weekend, with more than 1 600 performers taking centre stage. The theme for this year is "Afr’energy".
The Fan Walk along Somerset Road and Main Road in Green Point will come alive this Saturday, 18 March at 18:00 for the street extravaganza. The parade is set to end at 22:00 on Saturday.
With eight floats, life-sized art and other pieces, the carnival will be a celebration of creativity and cultural diversity.
The following road closures will be in place:
Somerset Road:
Granger Bay Boulevard to Ebenezer Road from 12:00 to 13:00.
Granger Bay Blvd to Buitengracht Street from 13:00 to 1:00.
Exhibition Terrace and York Road from 13:00 to 1:00. Limited residents access only.
Highfield Road and Vesperdene Road from 13:00 to 1:00. Limited residents access only.
Main Road:
Granger Bay Blvd to Three Anchor Bay Blvd from 13:00 to 1:00. Limited residents access only.
Fritz Sonnenberg:
Vlei Road to Granger Bay Blvd from 13:00 to 1:00.
Granger Bay Blvd to A Track from 13:00 to 1:00.
Ebenezer Road:
Victoria Junction Hotel Parking Entrance to Somerset Road from 13:00 to 1:00.
Port Road to Prestwich Street will be closed from 13:00 to 1:00. Open to permit holders only.
Bennett Street:
Port Road to Prestwich Street will be closed from 13:00 to 1:00. Open to permit holders only.
De Smit Street:
Intersection between De Smit and Somerset roads from 13:00 to 1:00.
Moreland Terrace:

Prestwich Street to Hospital Street from 13:00 to 1:00.
Alfred Street:

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the carnival will bring many economic benefits for the city and residents.
"The Cape Town Carnival is a vibrant and unmissable experience for all residents and the many visitors to our city. From the floats to performances, this event is a celebration of individual creativity, ingenuity, and diversity," said Hill-Lewis.
This year, the parade will have 43 lead performers and 48 community performance groups from across the Western Cape.
They include carnival favourites such as the Western Province Marching Band and the Eaon Crew, the city's firefighters and 13 new community groups.
