The Montgomery County School Board may start offering students excused absences to take mental health days during the coronavirus pandemic.
A resolution to that effect was introduced at Wednesday night’s board meeting by student member Nick Asante, WTOP reported.
“I know mental health is an issue that a lot of students care about,” the student said. “And it’s something that’s always been at the forefront. But I think now more so than ever. It’s something that’s a big concern for a lot of students.”
The board voted 7-1 in favor of considering the resolution, with Vice President Brenda Wolff dissenting, saying a sufficient policy already exists.
“It seems like busywork for the policy committee, because … as a parent, I can write in and say this already,” she said, WTOP reported.
As of Thursday, Montgomery County has 22,078 coronavirus cases and 801 related deaths, according to a tracker on the county website.
