‘Girlfriends’ creator Mara Brock Akil signs Netflix deal: ‘It is a dream’
Mara Brock Akil, the executive producer known for 'Girlfriends,' is working on scripted content for Netflix
Mara Brock Akil has found a new home at Netflix. The executive producer is known for putting shows like Girlfriends, The Game, and Being Mary Jane on the map. She recently inked a deal with Netflix and is working on scripted content and special projects for the media service provider.
Akil was previously at Warner Bros. TV where she helped produce Black Lightning, The CW’s DC Comics drama. But now she is joining team Netflix with other show-runners like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Akil is excited to have a new home.

“It is a dream to partner with the force of Netflix, for we have the same goals — telling human stories for a global audience,” she said.
“I’m excited to have a home that allows me the creative freedom and support to do what I do best — paint portraits and murals of women, Black people and anyone else whose story is missing from this golden age of television. Representation matters and so does who you build with — I can’t wait to work closely with Channing Dungey and her team to launch some great stories.”
As reported by theGrio, two of Akil’s shows have been revived on Netflix. Girlfriends celebrates 20 years and will hit Netflix on Sept. 11. The Game originally aired in 2006 and is already available for fans to binge.

Channing Dungey is the vice president of original content at Netflix and the first Black president of major broadcast television. Dungey and Netflix are elated to have Akil join the team.
