Two wounded after shooting at Corentyne Father’s Day celebration

Two Corentyne men were wounded on Sunday evening after they were attacked by four men armed with a shotgun and pieces of wood at Friendship Village, Corentyne.

Police have since arrested one person, who witnesses say was one of the men who carried out the attack.

Joel Fraser, 22, a rice farmer of Alness Village, Corentyne, and Bhoopaul Roopnarine, 36, a self-employed man of Lot 1585 Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, are both presently hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

The two injured men along with several other persons were celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday evening around 9 pm, at a relative of Fraser, when the attackers approached Fraser and an argument ensued, which quickly led to a physical altercation.

The men then discharged several rounds in Fraser’s direction, causing him to sustain multiple shots about the body.

Eyewitnesses added that Roopnarine, who was standing in close proximity to Fraser, sustained two gunshot injuries.

They said the attackers then dragged Fraser out of the yard and into a cross street, where they used the pieces of wood to deal him lashes about his body, after which they fled.

The two injured men were then rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, where they were treated before being transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Up to yesterday they were both listed as being in stable condition.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses have since identified one of the attackers, who was arrested by police. As of yesterday afternoon, police were continuing to work to find the others.
