Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit FC Cincinnati have signed South African international Kamohelo Mokotjo, the club revealed on Thursday.

The Bafana midfielder had just left English Championship outfit Brentford, following the end of his contract, which had been extended for another two months in June, following the break brought on by the pandemic.

He now joins the MLS side, who had to reach into their “targetted allocation” purse to bring the player on board.

Speaking to Cincinnati’s official website, Mokotjo said he was looking forward to the new challenge.

“I felt like now is the right moment for a new challenge at a club that has big potential and is willing to challenge itself,” Mokotjo said. “I think in a way this is a perfect match. I’m honored and ready to relish this opportunity and challenge.”

Gerard Nijkamp, FC Cincinnati’s general manager, is confident that the former Supersport United man will be a good fit for the club.

“He is an intelligent player that will be an asset for our club on both sides of the pitch. We look forward to welcoming Kamo to Cincinnati and having him integrate within our locker room.”

From the Free State to the Major League

Mokotjo first grabbed the spotlight when he led South Africa’s Under-12 national team to the world title in 2003, where he was named player of the tournament.

He began his senior career at Supersport United, where he played just a handful of games before being snapped up by Dutch giants, Feyenoord.

During his time in the Netherlands, he enjoyed the most success in the colours of FC Twente, where he made over 100 appearances, even captaining the team on occasion.

Mokotjo’s spell at the club ended in 2017, when he secured a move to Brentford, signing a three-year contract.

He has earned 22 Bafana caps, having made his international debut in a friendly match against neighbours Mozambique in 2012.

FC Cincinnati return to action on Saturday, when they take on DC United at home.
