“One of the most common ways people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” — Alice Walker, award-winning author and womanist.

Hey, ZORA fam, we just want to remind you: Don’t underestimate the power of saying “no.”

We know it’s not always easy but there is power in prioritizing yourself and your needs. Saying you will or want to do something when you actually don’t is self-betrayal, whether that’s agreeing to do a work project, dating someone you’re not into or leaving your house when you don’t feel safe. There’s nothing wrong with making compromises for people you care about and occasionally putting the needs of others above your own. But don’t push your needs aside too often. Find your power. Practice prioritizing yourself.

Let us know how you’re standing up for your needs on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #ZORACheckIn.
