Justice Minister Ronald Lamola will be swopping his pinstripes for lycra on Saturday as he hosts a mountain biking fundraiser to help buy bicycles for underprivileged children.

The event will be held at the famed bush and veld of the Leeuwkop prison golf course north of Johannesburg.

Lamola's spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, said the challenge was an initiative started by Lamola, a keen mountain biker, to raise money to buy bicycles for children, especially girls, who had to walk long distances to school.

Proceeds of the R250 per person entry fee would go towards buying the bicycles and donating them to children to help make their journey to school easier.

The initiative was also seen as a way of introducing pupils to cycling.

The event would include three sessions covering distances of 5km, 10km and 30km. Those interested can register online as individuals or families at www.bouttime.co.za.

Social distancing and other Covid-19-related rules would apply.
