A dazzling display of historical and cultural brilliance. On Saturday I attended an event entitled, “ The Kimistry Lab Exspiritment.” The show exhibited a wide array of models, dressed in clothes made by local designers. imani Calloway was one of those designers, tasked to talk to local artist (like the others) and get a feel for their personality. They were then to create clothes that fit what they saw and heard from the artist. What made the event unique was the entire set up, a live action museum of art in the form of models. Some pieces were historically based and others cultural, but what captivated me is that each individuals outfit seemed to fit them perfectly. “ Sewing is becoming a lost art, says Kimberly the owner of Kimistry Labs. She offers sewing classes to anyone who wants to learn, and used the event to showcase the talents of up coming talent, and to also raise money to keep the classes going . “I have so many more interested then sewing machines,” says Kim who mentors other designers. I talked to one of them who was is 18, Taylor Cooper of Tailor Made clothing, who is looking to start her own line of clothing. She looks to Kimberly as a mentor who said something to me that stuck, “sewing machines have a heart beat,” they tell you how their feeling, they have the ability to provide comfort. She uses that passion and intimacy to teach , driving her passion to create. She and all those involved can be found on all social media handles. Go to KimistrybyKimberly.com for future events.
