Sabrina Ionescu, the #1 draft pick and player on the New York Liberty, started this season off with a spectacular performance last Wednesday. The stat line for her 2nd WNBA game was an efficient 33 points after going 11/20 from the field and 6/10 from three. She also had 7 assists and 7 rebounds. In what could only be described as the terrible luck of 2020, Ionescu suffered a left ankle injury during her 3rd game against the Atlanta Dream on Friday.

The injury was reported as a Grade 3 sprain and the Liberty coach Walt Hopkins described it as “a massive loss.” This certainly puts another damper on her rookie season that has already been marred with the tragic loss of her mentor Kobe Bryant and the coronavirus pandemic which has impacted her first WNBA season.

The severity of the injury has not been disclosed by the team. Coach Hopkins said, “We’re still playing it by ear. She’s gotta get some more in-depth work on it, and then we’ll have a better answer.”
