- South Africa recorded more than 4 600 new Covid-19 infections on Wednesday.
- The NICD reported a further 166 Covid-19-related deaths in the country.
- To date, 15 447 034 vaccine doses have been administered.
The Western Cape recorded the majority of new confirmed Covid-19 cases on Wednesday as the number of infections increased by 4 667 in South Africa.
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), this brought the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases in South Africa to 2 869 201 on Wednesday.
"This increase represents a 9.6% positivity rate," the NICD said in a statement.
The Western Cape recorded 1 179 new cases, KwaZulu-Natal 1 058 and the Eastern Cape 718.

"The majority of new cases today (Wednesday) are from Western Cape 25%, followed by KwaZulu-Natal 23%. Eastern Cape accounted for 15%; Free State accounted for 11%; Gauteng province accounted for 9%; Northern Cape accounted for 7%; North West accounted for 5%; Mpumalanga accounted for 4%; and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today's new cases," the NICD said.
A further 166 Covid-19-related deaths have been reported, bringing the total confirmed fatalities to 85 468.
NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said there was an increase of 270 hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle in both the public and private sectors.
The cumulative number of recoveries is 2 700 299, representing a recovery rate of 94.1%, according to the national health department.

South Africa has conducted 17 191 349 tests in total.
To date, 15 447 034 vaccine doses have been administered in the country.
On Tuesday, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said his government had administered 2 502 471 cumulative vaccine doses.
