Taxi operator accused of mowing down policeman charged

About 7:45 a.m. on January 24, the driver of this taxi allegedly disobeyed a red light at the intersection of Trafalgar Road and Worthington Avenue in New Kingston.

The taxi operator accused of mowing down a policeman during a traffic stop six months ago has now been charged.

Forty-three-year-old Edward Rochester of Jarrett Lane, Kingston has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving.

He was arrested on Friday, July 10.

About 7:45 a.m. on January 24, Rochester allegedly disobeyed a red light at the intersection of Trafalgar Road and Worthington Avenue in New Kingston.

The policeman detected the traffic breach and signalled Rochester to stop.

According to the police, Rochester initially complied.

However, on the approach of the cop, he drove off and hit the policeman breaking his leg in the process.
