Now that Meghan McCain has traded gigs, leaving ABC's The View for a new job at The Daily Mail, she's not mincing her words about why she exited the daytime talk show. In her upcoming memoir, Bad Republican, McCain details her four years on the show and tells Variety she ultimately decided to leave due to the "toxic" work environment and "hostile" incidents with her coworkers. 

"My take on the show is that working at The View brings out the worst in people. I believe that all the women and the staff are working under conditions where the culture is so f**ked up, it feels like quicksand," the former host said. "In my four years there, I was the target of plenty of shade — too much to even begin to recount — and then I also experienced more toxic, direct and purposeful hostility."

McCain announced she was leaving the show in July, according to The Hill. She said she wanted to spend more time with her newborn and husband, as well as pursue other opportunities. 

But she goes on to say that things weren't always negative. She had plenty of good memories with the other hosts, including Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin. McCain said Goldberg originally promised the controversial Republican's famous father that she would watch out for her on the series before he died. She says the agreement was upheld for the first couple of years, though things took a turn down the road. 

Toward the end of her tenure, McCain and Goldberg, as well as the other hosts, were the subjects of multiple tense moments.

"The thing about Whoopi, though, is that she yields so much power in culture and television, and once she turns on you, it can create unfathomable tension at the table. I found her open disdain for me more and more difficult to manage as the years went on and it became more frequent," she said. 

"During my time on The View, I felt like I was often being punished and singled out for being a conservative. I’d hear a lot of complaints that the staff, including the other co-hosts and producers, had problems with my 'personality,'" McCain added.

Things eventually came to a head when she returned from her maternity leave following the birth of her daughter Liberty, whom she shares with husband Ben Domenech. McCain joked that her co-host Behar "missed arguing" with her. Behar responded that she did not miss her at all while she was gone. 

McCain explains she was going through serious postpartum depression at the time, saying that the moment threw her into a full-blown emotional attack. She describes violently sobbing after the incident and not being able to continue from that moment on.  

"Until that moment, it hadn’t even occurred to me that Joy hadn’t missed me. She’d texted me to ask to see a baby picture of Liberty, and she’d seemed happy for me. We’d chatted in a friendly way. I believed that, despite all our differences, deep down, we had a mutual understanding of respect for each other," McCain recalled of the incident. "When we broke for commercial, I burst into tears. Not just like tearing up, uncontrollable sobbing."

"It is one of the most singular feelings of loneliness and anguish I have felt in my entire life. It was a perfect storm of hormones, postpartum anxiety and a lot of demons on The View coming out to bite me," she shared.
