Even though it is now Level 2 of lockdown, how comfortable are you taking a holiday? If you’re contemplating a local getaway (and we’d argue, you should), read on for some advice, reassurance and tips so that you can make the most of your first local trip in months.
“It’s the year of the self-drive road trip and truly experiential, off-the-grid travel,” says Sue Garrett, general manager of product and marketing at the Flight Centre Travel Group in South Africa.
“Think local and regional ‘microcations’ (holidays shorter than five nights), off the beaten path experiences, hiking weekends, glamping and camping – and even the nostalgia of train travel.”
“We want South Africans to get outside and explore our beautiful country. Our newly-launched Homegrown Holidays collection, a range of new, out of the ordinary domestic travel packages, makes this a possibility for all clients looking to explore easily – and with added peace of mind,” adds Garrett.
Top of mind for most South Africans in Level 2 at the moment: Where can I stay? How do I know establishments are “accredited” as complying with the new, enhanced health and safety regulations?
Rest assured, the hospitality and tourism industry has implemented some of the most stringent health and safety protocols in the world, giving customers added peace of mind. But know that the check-in process and guest experience may look quite different than it did pre-COVID-19.
Here’s what you should expect from your accommodation establishment in Level 2:
Another pressing question: What if I need to cancel? In other words, what if I get sick and need to cancel my trip, or what if the government regulations change and I am no longer allowed to travel?
Flexible booking has become as much, if not more, of a factor, than price report travel experts. In highly unusual times, when things may change with little notice, travellers need the assurance and flexibility to make any travel decision confidently.
Suppliers have recognised the need for flexible booking and cancellation processes.
“Customers can ask about our money back guarantee,” says Garrett. “All customers need to do is contact their travel expert, in writing, 24 hours before the intended check-in date, and we will refund immediately – no questions asked.”
Flexibility and value adds are expected to become critical considerations when booking any holidays in our post-COVID world of travel.
Level 2 is here. Don’t let doubt stop you from taking that much-anticipated post-lockdown trip. South Africa is ready to welcome you – and we’d wager, it’s going to look more beautiful than ever before.
