A 34-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly shooting his wife dead in a shop parking lot in Polokwane.

The incident took place at the Shoprite Supermarket on the corner of Grobler and Landdros Mare streets, said police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

"The police received a call about the incident at about 14:00 and rushed to the scene. On arrival, the bullet-riddled body of a 32-year-old woman was found inside a motor vehicle," he said.

The victim is understood to be from Seshego. Police investigations revealed that she was seated in a car with a man when her husband arrived at the scene.

"An argument ensued and the husband [allegedly] took out a firearm and shot the woman several times. She died instantly," said Mojapelo.

The man who was with the victim fled the scene. Police are still searching for information as to his identity.

"Police later recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the murder. The firearm will be subjected to ballistic examination to determine if it was used in the commission of other serious crimes. Its lawfulness will also form part of the unfolding investigations. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage but domestic violence cannot be ruled out," said Mojapelo.

The suspect will be appearing in Polokwane Magistrate's Court soon, facing a charge of murder.
