Manqoba Mngqithi has spoken kindly of Lebohang Maboe’s versatility and what he brings to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The former Maritzburg United midfielder has played as a right-back, midfielder and striker since his arrival at Chloorkop two seasons ago.

And while Mngqithi admits the technical team is forced to play Maboe at right-back, he revealed they still want to see Lebohang Maboe play as a number 8 at Sundowns.

Nonetheless, the Mzimkulu-born mentor feels the 26-year-old hasn’t done enough in terms of converting goalscoring chances into goals in recent times.

“To be honest, as coaches, we did not want to play him at right-back but it’s just that circumstances are forcing us to play him there because he was giving us a lot as a number 8,” Mngqithi told the media.

“He’s got the right intensity for us. The boy works very hard. He’s brilliant, he’s an intelligent boy.

“As an 8, the only thing he hasn’t done enough is to convert the chances that we create sometimes. He shoots astray and at times, he doesn’t see that final moment which is why we didn’t want to move him to right-back because we are looking at his progress knowing what he can give us.

“If he can be a little bit more composed without anxiety in the attacking third [then he can score more]… but I am encouraged,” he added.

“He’s a kind of player that says, ‘coaches if you need me there, I can do the job’,” concluded Mngqithi.

Maboe has featured in over 100 matches for the Tshwane giants since making his debut in August 2018, and he has 14 goals and 13 assists to his name.

He has two assists and one goal in 16 competitive games for Mamelodi Sundowns this season.
