THE HIGHEST UPTAKE OF VACCINES REMAINS AMONG THE AGE GROUP 50 YEARS AND OLDER.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs remains steadfast and committed to the fight against COVID-19, ensuring that vaccines are available and accessible to all.

As it relates to both the Pfizer and Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccines, a total of 37,103 first doses and 27,839 second doses of these COVID-19 vaccines have been administered, to date. Only 15.4% of the population is fully vaccinated. We’re still a long way from population immunity.

The highest uptake of vaccines remains amongst the 50 years and older age group; although over the past month there has been a noted increase in the 24 to 49 years age group. Since the introduction of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine, the number of young persons vaccinated has also increased.

The Ministry continues to appeal to the people of Saint Lucia especially the younger population, to get vaccinated. The eligible target population for the COVID-19 vaccine is now 12 years and older. To the concerned parents and guardians, the Pfizer vaccine is safe and effective.

Last week, a very positive response was noted with the introduction of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Both vaccines are available at the various vaccination sites. Persons who are due for the second dose of the vaccine are encouraged to access one of the sites. It is only when one is fully vaccinated, that he/she is guaranteed the full protection that vaccines afford.

The Delta variant is dangerous and is known to spread quickly, causing a pandemic of the unvaccinated. In light of that, you are encouraged to get vaccinated.

Data from the Respiratory Hospital indicates that all COVID-19 hospitalization with severe disease, and deaths thus far, continue to be among the unvaccinated. There are cases where vaccinated people have contracted COVID-19, but were either asymptomatic or exhibited very mild symptoms. To date, only 1.6% of the positive cases reported are fully vaccinated, leaving the other 98.4% unvaccinated. It must be noted that if one is fully vaccinated i.e. with both doses, plus two weeks, the risk of severe illness is very low.

Vaccines are what will get us back to the way of life we once lived and enjoyed. It is what will help us regain our livelihoods and save lives.

Be reminded that in addition to the sites across the island, vaccines are available at the Wellness Centers. Call to make an appointment. Further updates on the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out will be provided next week.
