Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said the total number of COVID-19 cases in South Africa are now at 21 343.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Saturday 23 May, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have risen to 21 343.
This is an increase of 1 218, as the total number of confirmed cases surpassed 20 000 and stood at 20 125 on Friday 22 May.
Mkhize announced an updated death toll of 407. This is an increase of 10 as it stood at 397 on Friday 22 May.
A total of 564 370 tests have been conducted to date with 21 338 tests done in the last 24 hours. There have been 10 104 recoveries thus far.

The Western Cape is still the COVID-19 epicentre with the most positive cases in the country.

Mkhize announced the COVID-19 recoveries as follows:
President Cyril Ramaphosa, will on Sunday 24 May, address the nation at 19:00. According to the presidency, the president will discuss developments in South Africa’s risk-adjusted strategy to manage the spread of COVID-19.
The President’s address follows recent meetings of Cabinet, the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and the President’s Coordinating Council, which considered the prospects for the country’s progression from Alert Level 4 to Alert Level 3 of the national lockdown.
As part of exploring possible prospects and assessing the continuing health, social and economic impacts of the pandemic, Ramaphosa has also held consultative meetings with the business, labour and community constituencies of the National Economic Development and Labour Council; leaders of political parties represented in Parliament; traditional leaders; leadership of interfaith communities; the South African Council of Churches, and the tourism industry, which is the single largest source of employment in the private sector.
