We have seen over the last couple of years how injuries have been part of the New Yankees roster like the pinstripes on their uniform. Yet, the “next man up” mentality has been accepted and the team continued to find ways to win. In 2017, they had as many as 16 players on the injured list including Gary Sanchez, C.C. Sabathia, Greg Bird and Brett Gardner. They managed to overcome the injuries and even took a 3-2 series lead over the Houston Astros in the American League Championship series only to lose the last two games on the road. 2018 was even worse if that could be believed. Slugger Aaron Judge, Sanchez again was part of the 23 players that spent time in the trainer’s room. The weirdest injury was J.A Happ who came down with hand, foot and mouth disease. They got to the American League Division series only to lose the Boston Red Sox in 4 games. Last year was “Ground Hogs Day” again for the Bronx Bombers. This time, Giancarlo Stanton, Judge and Aaron Hicks was part of a whopping 26 different players on the injured list by the first week in August. Again, like 2017, they would face Houston in the ALCS and would come up short again losing in 6 games.

In this Covid19 shortened baseball season, injuries once again have hit the Yankees. Stanton and Judge did not play in the 4-game series against the Boston Red Sox that concluded Monday night as the Yankees swept them outscoring them 31-13. New York upped their record to 16-6 (6 straight wins) having beaten the Red Sox 10 straight times. They have not lost at home (10-0) this year. It tied the organizations best start in team history from 1951 and 1987. Boston’s record fell to 6-17.

In Monday night’s 6-3 win, which included a rain delay of 1hr 23 minutes, Aaron Hicks, Thairo Estrada and Luke Voit (2 HR’s) went deep. Said Hicks, who has reached base in 17 straight games, “I feel like I have a pretty good approach at the plate.”

In his first appearance since being diagnosed with Covid19, closer Aroldis Champman finished the game getting the last 3 outs. It was a non-save relief stint as he threw 100 and 101mph.

The Yankees began a 3 games series Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays before going to Queens the face the Mets beginning Friday. The Mets fell to 9-14 after getting swept by the Philadelphia Phillies on the road. They began a 4-game series in Miami to face Marlins 9-7 Monday night winning 10-4 as ex-Yankee Robinson Cano hit 2 home runs.
