South Africa recorded 12 222 new laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 infections and 138 deaths, bringing the official death toll to 60 038 on Monday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Monday, the country recorded 1 941 119 laboratory-confirmed cases.
"The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)… reports that 12 222 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 28.3% positivity rate," the statement read.

As of Monday, Gauteng recorded 629 399 confirmed cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 352 401 and the Western Cape with 319 392.
"The Gauteng province accounts for the majority of new cases (69%), followed by the Western Cape (7%)," NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.
Gauteng recorded 8 408 new cases on Monday, the Western Cape 902 and Limpopo 563.

By Monday, 11 801 people were admitted to both public and private hospitals. There has been an increase of 512 hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle.
South Africa conducted 13 011 903 tests by Monday, of which 43 155 were carried out in the last 24-hour reporting cycle.
The recovery rate is 88.8%, which translates to 1 723 882 recoveries.
The total number of people vaccinated is 2 787 996, with 97 202 vaccine doses being administered in the last 24-hour cycle.
