A KwaZulu-Natal man has been killed in a mob attack after being accused of murdering a child in Verulam.

The child died in a house fire on Saturday night, said police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

"At 23:00, Verulam police received a complaint of a house on fire in the Tandani area in Verulam and proceeded to the scene. Upon their arrival, they noticed the burnt body of a 6-year-old boy," she said.

The ex-boyfriend of the child's mother allegedly started the fire. He had allegedly "burnt down her shack with her son in it after he had an argument with her current boyfriend", said Mbele.

The boy was burnt beyond recognition.

The next day, at around 12:00, angry residents located the ex-boyfriend and allegedly set him alight.

He sustained burn wounds and was declared dead at the scene. Two cases of murder and arson were opened at the Verulam police station for further investigation, said Mbele.

Mbele said:

The community is urged to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and let police continue doing their job by investigating and arresting the suspects involved in criminal activities. The community must ensure that they work with the police by providing information. The community members who continue to commit such acts will face the might of the law.
