Motorists in Durban have faced traffic chaos on Wednesday afternoon after protesters on the N3 managed to shut both carriageways with their protests. Amongst other demands, the artists want a change in Level 2 laws to allow them to play to larger crowds – generating more revenue in the process.
Local traffic agencies reported the first signs of a disturbance just after 11:00.

The protests were taking place between Pavilion Mall and Spaghetti Junction, two very busy turn-offs on the N3 highway. Durban road users have been told to take alternative routes, as the demonstration occupied every available lane. Eventually, police intervention moved the protesters to safety, and no injuries have been reported in the clashes so far.

There were a number of arrests to report, and both stun grenades and rubber bullets were used to quell the disturbance. Campaigning under the banner of #VulaPresident, the group felt they had to do something drastic to shine a spotlight on their plight. This is certainly one way to draw attention to yourself, it has to be said…
