1976-2020
This week marks the 44th Anniversary of the Milwaukee Community Journal, We embarked with our mission and goal: ”We want to accentuate the positives”.
The MCJ logo. a brand strategy for “community”: home, and family; business and economy; church and faith, the flag, connoting political awareness and building neighborhoods and country; and the schoolhouse, representing education, upward mobility and solidarity, were definable objectives for focus and delivery. They have remained authentic for forty-four years. Community is more than a name, it is a mission.
From a paltry group of four, Patricia O’Flynn(Thomas ) Pattillo; Robert Thomas, Jimmy Ewing and Mikel Holt, this institution has served, employed, driven by the principals of the initial logo. The symbols hold as much weight today as when we first began.
Milwaukee Community Journal, with its Wednesday and Friday editions, plus a burgeoning Digital edition; State certification as an Official newspaper, along with being the largest circulated Black Publication in the State of Wisconsin, are achievements hard earned and deeply respected.
Even during Covid 19 and an unprecedented year of change and advertising losses, MCJ has proven itself “essential”. With a reduced staff and talented professionals who just keep on giving and keeping on fighting to exist and succeed, MCJ has managed to reach another Anniversary. We thank every reader, advertiser and every staff member who simply refused to let “ the Community” down.
This year, MCJ does not have its ANNIVERSARY Special Edition, nor will we have our ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP BRUNCH at the Italian Conference Center, due to Covid 19. But through Continuing Eduction grants, buffered by the bequeath of Mrs. Ernestine O’Bee, plus the generosity of the Dr. Terence N. Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. Board, corporate friends and people who have witnessed the successes of Dr. TNT Scholars, a Virtual Celebration of “ Seeding Success” shall proceed, Sunday, August 9, 2020.
Expect to learn more as this celebration is recorded and digitized for a Premiere Community-Wide Fundraising Event on the Thanksgiving weekend. Several pieces of art shall be available for Bid, along with compelling oral stories about the Success of past Alums of the Dr. Thomas Fund, as they congratulate the CLASS OF 2020.
Two new scholars will be inducted into this class. Yet 25 superb scholars sought the
$ 2000 per annum stipend, issued to varied accepted scholars throughout their academic careers. A total of nine additional scholars, from Sophomore year to Senior year, along with two post graduates, in International Communications and Policy, at Johns Hopkins University, and UW Madison School of Law, respectively, will be granted their awards again. Our requests exceed our funds; and their needs exceed our desire to support. Ninety eight percent of the scholars graduate and 85% continue post graduate studies.
The Dr. Thomas Fund tracks every scholar from their acceptance into the fund throughout their academic and professional careers. We “seed success” : success that is traceable and exponential in strengthening families, neighborhoods, cities and states.
Join us in celebrating these magnanimous leaders. Toast their tenacious scholastic prowess and record them as future leaders.
Watch for the “Seeding Success” the Dr. Terence N. Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund Premiere Thanksgiving weekend…and plan to donate to excellence. Support EDUCATION. EDUCATION STRENGTHENS ALL OF THE OTHER SYMBOLS IN THE MCJ LOGO AND BRAND.
