More than 562,000 Americans have died from the coronavirus as of Monday, with nearly 7,000 people dying in the past week as the global pandemic continues into its second year.

The U.S. reported 283 coronavirus-related deaths Sunday, putting the country’s toll at 562,141, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.

With the 46,378 new cases reported Sunday, the U.S. now has more than 31.2 million known infections since the start of the pandemic last year, according to the Johns Hopkins tracker.

The U.S. easily leads the world in both cases and deaths, accounting for roughly 23% of all cases and 20% of all related deaths globally.

Though numbers are starting to surge again in some sections of the country as newer, more contagious variants of the virus gain steam, the rate of cases and deaths are still down significantly from the pandemic’s peak in January, when daily cases rose as high as 300,000 and thousands of deaths were being reported.

The decreases are in no small part due to the vaccination efforts that have ramped up since beginning in December. As of Monday, the U.S. has administered approximately 187 million of its 238 million available coronavirus vaccine doses, with 72 million people — or about 22% of the population — now fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
