Helping Our People Excel (HOPE Inc.) Engages AME-SADA

Helping Our People Excel (HOPE) was recently awarded a USD$190,000 grant from the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund. This Fund supports women’s rights organizations that are working to end violence against women and promote human rights and gender equality in peace and security contexts. This grant allows HOPE to implement the project, “POWER: Promotion of Women Empowerment and Rights,” to build the capacity of women to serve as local gender actors in rural Liberia.

After successful meetings between HOPE’s Executive Director, the Rev. Aisha C. Bruce; AME-SADA’s Executive Director, Mr. Robert Nicholas; and SADA’s Ghana Office Country Director, Mr. Awusi Natoma; HOPE and AME-SADA signed a Memo of Understanding to collaborate on any activities and programs that the two organizations may find to be of common interest and benefit.

We are excited to announce our first partnership initiative. As part of the POWER Project, AME-SADA will establish a Women’s Agricultural Co-Operative Network and establish Village Savings Loans Associations (VLSAs) for women residing in the participating communities. These women will also be trained and registered into cooperatives to make them viable units for advocacy and other socio-economic activities.

HOPE was established as a ministry of the Empowerment Temple AME Church in Liberia, under the leadership of its pastor, Dr. Katurah York Cooper. In 2010, HOPE received legal status as a not-for-profit. HOPE’s main areas of work are education and leadership development, sexual reproductive health, and rights and economic empowerment. HOPE is currently involved in national-level advocacy and community-level projects in 11 of the 15 counties of Liberia and is an implementing partner with Global Fund for Women, OXFAM, Public Health Institute/Rise Up, Ministry of Gender-Liberia, and other national and international institutions.
