Eskom load reduction is set to affect suburbs around KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) during peak hours on Friday.

The planned blackouts have become the norm in certain areas around Gauteng, mostly those with a high number of illegal connections.

The power utility says the outages are a result of a strain in its grid, with bypassed metres also playing a role.

That is again the case in KZN, which is also suffering an overload in its network.

On Friday, Eskom issued out a statement notifying its customers that it will implement load reduction in the evening.

“Eskom has a duty to protect its electricity infrastructure, and to limit the unnecessary losses. In response to this reality, Eskom will therefore switch off overloaded networks during peak periods in order to protect the network and for the safety of the public. Power will be switched back on after the peak loading period, or when it’s safe to do so. This is in line with the electricity operating code.”

Meanwhile, Gauteng residents, who have born the brunt of these power cuts since June will also not be spared of a period of darkness on Friday night.

Several suburbs in Soweto, the West Rand and the Vaal have been affected by load reduction almost daily over the past few weeks, while Tshwane has also fallen victim to the power cuts on some occasions.

On Friday, only Eskom customers in the West Rand are likely to be spared, with the other two set to be cast into darkness once more between 17:00 and 22:00.
