Maryland’s coronavirus statistics are at the lowest point since the start of the pandemic in mid-March of 2020, state officials said Monday.

Examples of low points are the state’s positivity rate hovering around 2% and fewer people going to the hospital, which officials credit widespread vaccination efforts. Brigadier General Janeen Birckhead, the leader of the Maryland Vaccine Equity Task Force said following the data has been the key to making progress against the virus.

Plus, she said getting out in the community has helped significantly, at an appearance at CASA, a Latino-oriented social service organization.

“Today, here we’re at CASA and I have people who speak Spanish in our ranks who are being those out speaking the language and meeting people where they are and we will have to continue to do that on the local level,” Birckhead said, Baltimore’s WJZ-TV (Channel 13) reported.

WJZ said similar efforts occurred at Baltimore’s Kennedy Krieger Institution which aids people with disabilities and complex medical conditions.

The Department of Health reported Monday 5.9 million doses administered out of 7.5 million distributed, with 2.7 million Marylanders fully vaccinated.
